The Living Proof Method with Dr. Sachin Patel

In this episode of The Functional Medicine Radio Show, Dr. Carri’s special guest Dr. Sachin Patel talks about The Living Proof Method.

Dr. Patel founded The Living Proof Institute as a platform to showcase the benefits of functional medicine combined with lifestyle interventions.  His philosophy is that “nothing can fix your body better than it can fix itself”.  He employs his expertise as a functional medicine provider and empowers his patients to make lifestyle changes to produce long term results. His passion is to help people achieve greatness through health, because health is the vehicle that allows one to serve their family and their community.

Main Questions Asked:

  • How did you get into the world of functional medicine?
  • How do you answer the question – “Why didn’t my doctor tell me about this?”
  • Talk about The Living Proof Method and The Six Pillars that you’re devised.
  • What are some tips that you can offer listeners to immediately apply?
  • Who do you consider a good candidate for functional medicine?

Key Points Made by Dr. Sachin Patel:

  • I was featured on the news and the news article that they did resulted in many people calling our clinic.
  • Around the same time I started learning about Functional Medicine, so since 2008, I’ve been basically doing Functional Medicine full time.
  • Why didn’t my doctor tell me about this?  That’s the question I get the most often as well, and once we peel back the layers of what the patient’s problem is, we can make it very clear to them why they’re sick or why they’re unwell, or why what they were doing before wasn’t working.
  • I think doctors are well-intentioned, as you would probably agree, but I just don’t think they have the training to address complex health issues.
  • The Living Proof Method and The Six Pillars – This is essentially 10 years of clinical practice and thousands of hours of training and working with patients.
  • We’ve distilled our patient’s health down to these Six Pillars and what we find is these pillars work really well if you’re trying to reverse somebody’s chronic health issues, or if you’re trying to promote somebody’s health, so, the beautiful thing about The Living Proof Method is that it works universally.
  • Because we work at a cellular level with patients, whether you’re trying to optimize performance or whether you’re trying to reverse a chronic health issue, you want the cells to be healthy, so the six things that influence our cellular health are:
  • First, the Mitochondria, which provides energy and allows for proper cell function to take place. Healing requires energy, repair requires energy, normal cell metabolism requires energy.
  • The consequence of cell metabolism is waste, so the next thing we look at is Detoxification.
  • The next one is Brain Health.  Brain Health is very important.  A healthy brain makes health decisions.  An unhealthy brain makes unhealthy decisions, so we want to make sure that the patient has the right mindset, the right internal dialogue, and they have the right chemistry for the brain to function optimally.
  • The fourth pillar is Diet and Digestion, so it’s not just what you eat, but how you digest it, and how well you eliminate the waste products as a result of digesting and assimilating your food.
  • The next one is Stress Hormones and Inflammation and the two hormones that we really focus on are Cortisol and Insulin.
  • The next pillar is Lifestyle and Environment, and that’s probably the most important pillar.  Our lifestyle and the choices we make and the environment that we surround ourselves in plays a huge role in our cell signalling, which ultimately is what all six of these pillars are designed to do, it’s designed to help promote cellular health and good cell signalling.
  • The first thing that people can do is take personal responsibility and by taking personal responsibility, what I mean is living more congruently and what that means is living in a way that honours your body.
  • We have to learn how to keep things simple and so what we encourage our patients to do, right off the bat after their first visit before we do any testing on them, we have them keep a gratitude journal. Gratitude has been scientifically shown to make a huge impact.  We have so much as human beings to be grateful for.
  • You don’t even need to see a doctor to do that and the next thing is going to be on time and aligning yourself with the sunrise and the sunset and making sure that you’re not getting too much artificial light exposure.
  • Of course, exercise is a big player – we want to make sure that patients are active, that they’re mobile, they’re moving around versus being sedentary
  • Just be active – just move as much as you can throughout the day.
  • Who do I consider a good candidate for Functional Medicine?  Great question.  A simple answer – everyone is a good candidate for Functional Medicine.
  • So I believe that Functional Medicine is a vehicle to not only restore your health, but I also believe that it’s a vehicle to promote your health and take it to another level.
