Five Big Nutrition Tips for Better Health with Ronsley Vaz

In this episode of The Functional Medicine Radio Show, Dr. Carri’s special guest Ronsley Vaz talks about five big nutrition tips for better health.

Ronsley is the host of Australia’s #1 food podcast Bond Appetit which focuses on two main areas: uniting entrepreneurs through food and fixing their relationships with food. He’s been cooking for over 19 years.  He’s started and runs his own fresh food restaurant specializing in uniquely flavored food and also working in a big kitchen as part of a brigade of chefs.  Ronsley has a Master’s Degree in Software Engineering and an MBA in Psychology and Leadership.

Main Questions Asked:

  • How did you go from a Master’s Degree in Software Engineering and an MBA in Psychology and Leadership to owning a restaurant and being a chef?
  • How do your degrees in software engineering and psychology help you with being a chef?
  • What would you say are 5 small actions to help us get unstuck regarding food and nutrition?
  • Some patients get sick of drinking water. Can you put something in water to give it some flavor?
  • For those of us who cannot afford a personal chef like you just yet, what would you say are 5 small actions that all of us could start doing today to help get us unstuck when it comes to food and nutrition?

Key Points made by Ronsley:

  • Tip #1: Drink lots of water.  Increasing your water intake is a massive benefit.  It helps with sugar and fat cravings.
  • Your brain doesn’t know the difference if you’re hungry or thirsty so go for water first.
  • Flavoring should NOT be added to your water. If you need to add flavor to your water squeeze a lime into it, but don’t use artificially flavored water.
  • Tip #2: Eat fresh food, real food.
  • Go to farmer’s markets, the butcher shop, the fishmonger’s, etc. Support your local providers.
  • Most people are so used to processed food that the gut bacteria crave it. Break the cycle!  Persevere for a couple of weeks eating only real food to let your taste buds and other senses adjust.
  • Tip #3: Plan your meals.  We plan our day, our businesses and our holidays so they turn out well.  We should be planning our food in the same way.
  • You can batch cook and put multiple dinners together in 30-60 minutes.
  • Use tools like food processors to do most of the work for you.
  • Do your salad and veggie prep at the beginning of the week.
  • Tip #4: Do NOT eat in front of the TV.  We’ve lost the idea of sitting around the table and sharing a meal with loved ones.
  • We think we’re getting more done by eating at the computer but our body doesn’t know what to do, if it should get in digestion mode or not.
  • When we’re at the table and talking, our body gets into food and digestion mode. And, rates of depression don’t exist if you share one meal a day with your family. (True story!)
  • Just eat and don’t do anything else.
  • Tip #5: If you go to the supermarket do not believe in the labels.  It’s just pure marketing.  If you really want to know what’s in the box, read the list of ingredients.  If you cannot pronounce it or don’t know what it is, put it back.
