What is Functional Medicine?

In a nutshell Functional Medicine is:

  1. Find the Cause.
  1. Fix the Cause.
  1. Feel Normal Again!

Functional Medicine is at the forefront of natural medicine.

Function Medicine can help you find the root, underlying cause of your health problems.

It’s not a band-aid approach – it doesn’t treat symptoms only. It goes to the very core…to the root underlying cause…of your health problems…and then corrects the imbalances with natural treatments.

Here’s an example…

I’ll use fatigue. It’s a common problem…and difficult to diagnose the underlying cause.

Typically your medical doctor will check you for 1.) anemia, and 2.) low thyroid. If you do not have either one of those (and you are otherwise healthy) what often happens next is you’re told “It’s all in your head” (or other such nonsense) and handed a prescription for antidepressants.

With Functional Medicine the approach is quite different.

We want to find the underlying cause of the fatigue…

And because everything in the body is connected…

We look over your whole body – all your body’s systems – for clues.

You can see the real question in Functional Medicine is WHY. Why is the fatigue there? What is out of balance that’s creating the fatigue?

Without addressing the root causes of illness…treatment generally only works temporarily…like a band-aid.

The real solution to any problem is to fix the underlying cause.

This is how Functional Medicine differs not only from Western medicine but also treatments prescribed by many holistic health practitioners – including naturopaths.

The possible root causes of fatigue are many and all need to be explored to bring healing.

There are 14 causes of fatigue I address in my practice:

  1. Anemia
  2. Thyroid Problems
  3. Cortisol Imbalance
  4. Blood Sugar Imbalance
  5. Nutrient Deficiencies
  6. Chronic Infections
  7. Hidden Food Allergies & Sensitivities
  8. Brain Imbalance
  9. Dysfunctional Mitochondria
  10. Toxins and Heavy Metals
  11. Gluten Intolerance
  12. Melatonin Imbalance
  13. Estrogen Deficiency
  14. Dysfunctional Breathing

The first 8 on my list – I call them Fatigue Factors – I outline in detail in my book Reclaim Your Energy and Feel Normal Again! Fixing the Root Cause of Your Fatigue with Natural Treatments.

My book is specifically about using the Functional medicine approach to help women suffering with fatigue.

The last important thing about Functional Medicine that you should know is…

Everyone is unique and different.

This means testing and treatment is personally tailored to YOU. It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach – that doesn’t work with t-shirts and it certainly doesn’t work with healthcare.

At this point you’re probably thinking “Well, that makes perfect sense! I want a doctor just like that. I want a Functional Medicine doctor!”

Functional Medicine just makes sense.

And, that’s why I love being a Functional Medicine doctor.
