Menopausal Women Who ‘Know It All’ Are Not Invited To Read This Page

I treat a lot of menopausal women.

In fact, I consider myself a specialist in that area.

Hot flashes…Night sweats…Depression…Anxiety…Weight gain…Mood swings. They can all be fixed without ever using hormones.

I know, because that is what I do in my office week in and week out.

In my office menopausal women generally fall into one of two categories:

1. They either do not want to touch hormone treatments (synthetic or bioidentical) because of the inherent risk of cancer, and instead want to balance their hormones naturally.

Or…

2. They cannot use hormone treatments because they already have a history of hormone sensitive cancer (breast, ovarian, uterine, or cervical), or a family history, and want natural solutions that are safe and effective.

Cancer is a concern for many women, especially the cancers related to hormones – breast, ovarian, uterine, and cervical.

In my own family my mom’s mother died of breast cancer in her 40’s, leaving behind a husband and four young girls. A few short years from now I will be outliving her! So be sure I have cancer concerns on my mind, too!!

If you’re like most menopausal women, you want to have more control over your health, especially your hormonal health, want to live a long and healthy life, and this includes using proven cancer prevention strategies whenever possible.

Fortunately for you, there is a test for that. Or, I should say, tests.

There are two very important numbers you need to know if you want to minimize your risk for hormone sensitive cancers.

Test #1 is actually is a simple urine test that measures the break-down products of estrogen. It is called the 2:16 ratio.

You see, in your body estrogen gets broken-down by your liver into various forms. There are forms which are protective of cancer (you want to have lots of these), and there are forms which are bad and encourage cancer growth (you want to have as little of this form as possible). This is called the 2:16 ratio.

2 is good. 16 is bad.

High ratio = good = protective against hormone sensitive cancers.

Low ratio = bad = encourages cancer growth.

Trust me, you WANT to know your ratio, because if it’s bad, it can be FIXED!

There are supplements and diet changes that can easily shift a bad ratio to a good ratio, in as fast as a couple of months!

Test #2 is actually a blood test that I talk about all the time, and is rarely done by medical doctors (don’t even get me started on THAT).

It’s a simple vitamin D test.

Surprised?

I know, I know, you are probably already taking vitamin D. Great!

But, if you’ve never been tested, how do you know if you’re taking enough?

You don’t!

The cancer protective effects of vitamin D start when your levels get above 100 nmol/L, and ideally above 125 nmol/L.

Again, unless you test, you may be getting little to no benefit from your D supplement.

So, let’s wrap up. The BEST two tests to assess your risk for hormone sensitive cancers are the 2:16 ratio and vitamin D. I’d be happy to share with you MY numbers the next time you are in the office. Just ask me!

Functional Medicine fits hand in glove with Preventative Medicine, and with the 2:16 test and the vitamin D test you will be well on your way to reducing your overall risk of cancers, especially hormone sensitive cancers.

To your good health!
