Staying clean

Staying Clean in a Toxic World (Part 1 of 4)

Staying clean in a toxic world?  Hah! You say.

Well, we do live in a very toxic and chemical-laden society.  Since the introduction of petrochemicals and the like since the 1950’s, we’ve been bombarded with toxins on a daily basis.

Do not despair!  There is hope of minimizing the effects of our daily chemical blast.

One way to do that is via nutritional detoxification.

This falls under the umbrella of Functional Medicine which looks at the cause of disease rather than just at the effect of disease by treating the cause rather than just the symptoms.

One thing that various chronic illnesses seem to have in common is environmental relationships.  For example, low level exposures to various types of fat-soluble substances (they stay concentrated in the body’s tissues) which then interrupt cellular function and produce disease.

As much as we’d love to clean up the world and rid ourselves of these nasty harmful substances, it is not realistic or likely to happen.

So what exactly can we do about the adverse effects?

Detoxification, that’s what.

Although petrochemicals are relatively new, humans have a long history of fending off some kind of bug or another because no human being has ever lived in a perfect environment.

We’ve had volcanic eruptions.  Moldy food.  There have been all sorts of things that people have been exposed to and have survived.  So the body must have its own native processes for managing this exposure and it does.

It’s called your detoxification system.

And, poor detoxification is pivotal to being really one of those root causes of many illnesses – like chronic fatigue.

But, it doesn’t stop there!

Medical detoxification programs have been shown to positively impact everything from neurological disorders to immunological disorders to problems related to heart  function and to digestion problems.

In Part 2, we’ll discuss where the detox magic happens.  Stay tuned.
