Why Your “Normal” Thyroid Might Not be Normal—Part Three

Welcome to part three of “Why Your ‘Normal’ Thyroid Might Not be Normal.”

The last two articles discussed why “normal” thyroid function, as determined through a blood test, may not mean your thyroid is functioning adequately; and how to do a simple at-home test to evaluate things further.

This article will explain what you can do if your at-home test shows improper thyroid function.

First off, let me start by explaining that when a functional medicine doctor prescribes a supplement, their goal is usually to help you “boost” your health temporarily.

Supplements are often used to give you the ability to make lifestyle changes that will improve your root problem. A thyroid supplement, like many other supplements, can be used for your entire life, but the root issue will never be solved until lifestyle changes are made. The aim is to avoid becoming dependent on supplements.

If you have used the at-home thyroid test and found abnormal function, the first thing to look at is whether or not you have been experiencing emotional stress.

Emotional stress is the most common problem for people with thyroid issues; grief and loss are the two most common causes. Grief and loss can be felt when a death occurs in the family, a marriage breaks up, one gets fired from their job, or one retires.

The next thing to look at is whether or not there is a spiritual reason for your thyroid problem.

Might you have spent less time focused on your spirituality lately? Or, are there certain forces of nature that might be the cause? Could your communication, which corresponds to the throat chakra, be an issue? In Hindu, Buddhist, and yogic traditions, there is a “throat chakra,” or energy node, that exists in the body and corresponds with the thyroid gland, plus communication.

You might want to ask yourself if you have failed to be open with people, especially those that are close to you; or, if you have been communicating in a clear, honest, and compassionate manner?

The thyroid gland cannot be deeply healed without making adjustments to your lifestyle.

You must actively focus on improving your emotional and spiritual self, in order to avoid having to take supplements for the rest of your life.

Some people may choose to go to church to improve their emotional and spiritual self, while others might prefer to practise yoga or meditation. Finding a person who can teach you good life skills is another way to work on improving your thyroid.

Your teacher doesn’t necessarily have to be a practising spiritual instructor; he/she could be someone you see on a regular basis that helps you, knowingly or not. Lastly, if you like to read, pick up a book, such as “The Power of Now” by Eckhard Tolle.

Get to the root of why your thyroid isn’t functioning properly, through making positive lifestyle changes that are related to your emotions and/or spirituality!
